Social Media in the Christmas Aftermath

After the torn wrapping paper has settled and the fully bellies go to bed, my office is peacefully silent. I love those kinds of moments. My brain starts moving into full overdrive! I’ve been thinking a lot about what I hope 2011 will bring for me and my business. I’m so excited to ring in the new year =) My first wedding of the season is fast approaching, a portrait shoot already lined up and lots of model emails going back and forth to bring you guys some fun shoots in the upcoming winter months. As a photographer, these are the moments we live for. Planning, prepping, charging batteries. I’ve been learning more and more about how to balance my business, it’s not all photography these days! A few weeks ago I jokingly updated my status that I needed to understand HTML coding and be a rocket scientist to succeed. I’m really beginning to understand just how important the business part truly is in the words “Photography Business.”

Darren Rowse is an amazing blogger, I read his stuff nearly every day. He posted this really interesting topic on Social Media here. I started doing my own research on just how much time we as Americans spend online. The results were actually kind of surprising, even for me (the internet ADDICT). I’ve been realizing for months the power of Social Media tools to help market myself. But when I read that Americans are spending “equal time watching TV and online for 1st time ever,” I knew signing up for that Twitter account might not have been as crazy after all. And it’s addicting so I still don’t mind ;)

We like to connect, instantly! It’s part of what makes being around in 2010 so exciting. You could quickly log into Facebook from you iPhone, upload the photo of little Suzie really quick, then get on your bank app and deposit Aunt Carol’s Christmas check. So it should make sense that you’re hoping to reach even a small percentage of Facebook’s 500 MILLION *ACTIVE* (50% of those people log in DAILY. Yes. Daily). And that’s just Facebook. Flickr has over 5 billion images uploaded which are all searchable on places like Google. There’s a huge list of websites that allow you to connect. I don’t have cable so truthfully the internet is often times my connection to the outside world. I could cuddle up next to my honey with my laptop for hours. And we’re soulmates because he could do the same without complaint ;)

As we head into the new year I prompt you guys to take a look at whatever it is you are about. Vendors, fellow photogs, brides, mommies or simply a curious blog reader-there’s something out there for everyone and social media is here to stay. Well, it’s here to stay unless the internet disappears. And if that happens (and we’re all still here to see it) we have bigger issues =) I can’t find a photo to stick in here :( I’ll double up next post ;)

Tracey - The internet is a fascinating place – I remember when I first heard about it and thought – ‘nah it will never take off’! Also when Google first launched, I also thought it was doomed to fail with a name like that – how wrong could I have been – lol!

Good luck in this year Nat – I know it will be awesome for you <3January 13, 2011 – 6:59 am
